Derby Weekend

With the end of finals on Friday I was able to spend a good amount of time this weekend with friends. Spent a lot of the weekend at my old house, where my friend Jeff still lives. It's only a couple of blocks from Churchhill Downs, so it provided for a perfect place to party for Derby.

I joined in the fun on Friday afternoon. That evening, and throughout the weekend, several people were playing with a unicylce that Scott, Jeff's brother, brought with him. Most of the people that tried to ride it didn't have much more luck then Johnathan, a friend brought by my friend Nate Domin, here. It's really fun to watch people try to maintain their balance. It's really, really fun to watch people attempt the same after a few beers.

Speaking of Mr. Domin, we learned on Friday night how he got around New York when he went there this past New Years Eve. Of course, in the process we learned how to keep him in line. Not really, but we did have to get him to our destination on Friday night and he did volunteer. He jumped right into Steff's trunk and made no complaints when we closed it.

Friday night we spent time at the Granville hanging out. We had several other people join in here that didn't spend that much time with us the rest of the weekend as a whole. Among those that joined us where Nat and Colin. Nat came all the way from Pittsburgh, PA. Though packed a good part of the night, Granville was a pretty calm trip to the bar by my experience. Though calm trips to the bar are the norm for me. For some of the spicier events that happened at the Granville, you need to go to another souce. But we'll say that some people behaved in a rather interesting way.

Bryan Condor was kind enough to bring his famous Bourbon balls this year. After all, what's Derby, or any true Kentucky event, without bourbon. Everyone enjoyed them as demonstrated by Nat. Bryan also brought several bottles of bourbon for the enjoyment of those that came to celebrate derby with us. Selections varied from Woodford Reserve to Weller Special Reserve. But for the first time in years we didn't have any Maker's Mark in the house.

Hopefully I'll get more pictures to post over the next few days from friends that were there. In the end, it turned out to be an enjoyable weekend with friends. We were already talking about next year before everyone even headed home.

UPDATE - My good buddy Nate Domin has posted some pictures, with commentary, over at his website.

Ahhh, Derby. It's been 9 years since I was able to get back home for a weekend of Derby mayhem.
I'm jealous!

Yes. The picture of me in the trunk is real. I climbed into the trunk of another person's car. It was me. There is nothing more I can say... Actually, the trunk was quite spacious. I liked it in there and would be happy to try other trunks 'on for size'.
