Who is wise? He that learns from everyone. Who is powerful? He that governs his passions. Who is rich? He that is content. Who is that? Nobody. - Benjamin Franklin

Lileks on N.K.

Lileks has one of the most "unique" suggestions for handling North Korea. Of course, Lileks always has "unique" ideas.

"Fundraising"

Dodd Harris has found something to agree with in the CJ today. Like him, I rarely find one of Nick Anderson’s cartoons that I can agree with, but this one is an exception. Read to get the full thing.

LOTR, Reading, School and more

Well, two days are gone in my return to the fun environment of computer engineering courses at Speed School. Unlike with yesterday’s class, I’m not look forwarding to more of what’s likely to be the same for today’s class, databases. And of course, the day that the mid-term is scheduled is right after I come back from spending a few days out of town in early October.

Regardless of the boredom from class, the day as turned out rather well. I bought the LOTR: Twin Towers DVD and watched the movie along with the special features about Return of the King. I’ve been re-reading LOTR over the past few weeks and it’s been an enjoyable way to ignore all of the more pressing things in life.

I’m looking forward to the weekend already (which is probably not a good thing). With a few friends coming into town that I haven’t seen in awhile, it should be a lot of fun hanging out with them. So, though I’m not wishing time away, I’m ready for the next couple days to be spent. The question for me is whether I’ll feel the same way on Sunday night.

First day of classes over

Well, I’m back at Speed School finishing my MEng degree now. For the first time in over a year I took a computer engineering course. Fortunately for me, it looks like this course as promise and that my year spent at law school might actually be somewhat beneficial to the course, Computer Forensics.

I’ve taken courses and worked jobs that required knowledge in computer security. However, this is a slightly new direction for me. I’ve developed some basic skills in this area, but nothing that wouldn’t cause damage to some portion of the data that would result in it not being usable in any sense other than my own private knowledge.

On a side note, I’m still having problems with my connection at home. I’m to the point that I’m just going to cancel my cable modem and switch to DSL. I never had these problems with DSL and I’ve had nothing but problems with the cable company. I’ve taken to using a program called Zempt for writing posts for my blogs. That way I can write my entries and post them when I get a connection. Like I’m doing with this entry.

Moore and his crusade

I’ve been following the battle over a display of the ten commandments in Alabama over the past few months and have found myself more and more troubled by the way things are going. Quin Hillyer has one of the best summations of what I think the right direction out of this mess would be for conservatives in general in today’s NRO.

Also at NRO, John Derbyshire has a good suggestion for the left to consider.

There is a war on: People who hate America are working day and night to destroy us. Just a few months ago they murdered 3,000 of us, and brought down two of our noblest buildings. Manufacturing jobs are long gone, and middle-class paper-shuffling jobs are following them fast. Public-sector unions are pillaging our state treasuries to fund their 50-90 programs (retire at 50 on 90 percent of your salary). Meanwhile, trial lawyers are chewing their way like termites through the private sector. We have 13 million illegal immigrants scoffing at our laws and helping themselves to the welfare provisions that citizens have spent their lifetimes funding through taxes. Two million of us are currently in jail, and the one-eighth of our population that is black supplies one-half of those inmates. Our education systems are collapsing under absurd demands that “no child be left behind” — everyone must be above average! — and hundreds of thousands of citizens have fled those systems in disgust to school their kids at home. Our universities are in the hands of nihilist ideologues who hate their own nation, culture and ancestors. The political system has seized up, impossible-to-cut spending programs crashing head on into impossible-to-raise tax rates. Drop a cigarette butt into some power generator in Cleveland and you can shut down the northeastern U.S.A. for a day. A North Korean nuke has been smuggled across the Mexican border and hidden in a filing cabinet on the 102nd floor of the Sears Tower. (I made that up, but if it hasn’t actually happened yet, it won’t be long.)

And action to deal with all these problems is massively hindered by the fact that we can’t even talk about them in public for fear of being branded with one of the half-dozen modern equivalents of the scarlet letter — “racist,” “nativist,” “elitist,” “profiler,” and the rest of the idiot schoolmarmish cant we hear from the guardians of our public virtue.

In short, we are going to hell in a hand basket here, and all you liberals can think of is to jab your finger in the eyes of 46 percent of your fellow citizens over some footling dubious point of Constitutional law? Just ask yourselves — please, please, ask yourselves: Is Roy’s Rock really a proper target for my zeal, my energy, my passion, my money? Is my reaction to it in any kind of proportion to any harm it might conceivably do?

Cedar Point

I had a chance to go to Cedar Point for the first time this past weekend. It definately was a lot of fun. I’ve posted pictures and one video from the trip here. I have to say right now that my favorite ride at this park is Magnum. That’s even after it wrenched my neck.

NOTE: This part of the photo gallery is currently unreachable and will remain so until I've moved to a new service. This note will be removed at that time.

Insight Stinks

Well, the cable modem is down again. Not that I should be all that surprised. It’s been down as much, if not more, then it has been up and working since May. In order to get any work done I’ve had to head down to campus and use a machine down there. To make things a little easier I have my laptop setup on the wireless network down here, but it’s still a pain to come down to campus to do anything. It’s going on three days for the cable modem being dead, let’s see how long this will go.
